Brazil Pledges Haiti $100M for Legislative, Municipal Elections

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (defend.ht) - Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe held a working meeting with the Brazilian Ambassador accredited to Port-au-Prince on Wednesday where Brazil pledged $100 million in support for upcoming legislative and municipal elections.
July 13, 2012. - The Prime Minister, His Excellency Mr. Laurent Salvador Lamothe received, Wednesday, July 11, 2012, at his private residence, the Brazilian ambassador accredited to Haiti, Jose Luis Machado e Costa.
The strengthening of cooperation ties between the two peoples was the heart of this diplomatic meeting on the organization of legislative and municipal elections in Haiti, security, energy and education.
In support of these elections, the Brazilian diplomat has pledged an additional one hundred million U.S. dollars. It has, in parallel, renewed his government's determination to work to strengthen democracy in Haiti.
Moreover, the Brazilian chancellor praised the Martelly-Lamothe government for its commendable initiatives with regard to strengthening the rule of law, judicial reforms, in particular and the establishment of the Higher Judicial Council (CSPJ).
Regarding education, Prime Minister HE Mr. Laurent Salvador Lamothe met with the Ambassador of Brazil to obtain a favorable response to his request for renewal of scholarships awarded to students in Haiti.
As for the security issue, Jose Luis Machado e Costa is willing to support efforts of the Martelly / Lamothe government to restructure the PNH. Thus he expressed Brazil's interest to support the efforts of the Haitian government in its need for strengthening the police force, particularly the rural police and the Rapid Response Unit.
The Brazilian ambassador also confirmed the support of Brazil in the implementation of solar energy programs in the Artibonite Department.
