Reorganizing Higher Education in Haiti

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti - A roundtable on "Comparative systems of higher education and research" took place at the University Episcopal of Haiti (UNEPH), in Port-au-Prince, on May 17, 2011.
Organized by the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF) , the activity aimed to compare higher education Quebecers, French, Senegalese and Belgian to that of Haiti, and identify weaknesses and make proposals.
In his welcoming remarks, Mr. Lucien Jean Bernard, Rector of UNEPH thanked the AUF for choosing the university to host this event "The choice of Haiti in general and in particular UNEPH to host this Round table indicates the importance that the AUF to the promotion and development of higher education in Haiti, in accordance with the requirements of the new world order."
Professor Abderrahmane Lellou, Vice-President, political scientist at the Agence universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF), noted that the curricula of the various entities of the State University of Haiti (UEH) are not harmonized.
"Academic institutions have no incentive to compete, they must speak with one voice", he indicated.
And to address issues identified, the Lellou proposes the establishment of an agency of accreditation and evaluation in higher education and a national conference of university presidents in Haiti.
The Vice-President of the AUF believes that "it is a project of higher education that is conducted by all major institutions."
At the close of the meeting, Mr. Abderrahmane Lellou, invited Haitian universities to work together in collegiality. "Work together to strive for quality and excellence. The AUF, always listening to its members, will accompany you in this direction. "In conclusion, he called for the establishment of a body of accreditation and evaluation in higher education and a national conference of rectors of universities in Haiti.
