PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (defend.ht) - Less than two weeks after voting in favor of the new executive government as a member of the senate, former Senator Jean Rodolphe Joazile was installed as the Minister of National Defense in a ceremony held on Wednesday.
The former senator of the Nord-Est is also a former officer of the Armed Forced of Haiti (FAdH) and gave a guarantee at his installation to defend the territory, which he says requires that he meets many goals.
The ceremony was presided by the Minister to the Presidency Charged with Relations between the Parliament and the Executive, Ralph Theano and was attended by the Minister of Social Affairs, Ronald St. Cyr, Senators Jean-Baptiste Bien-Aime (Nord-Est/Inite), Derex Pierre-Louis (Nord-Est/Inite) and the President of the Senate, Simon Dieuseul Desras (Centre/Lavni).
According to Le Nouvelliste, after welcoming remarks delivered by Dr. Ernest Harrison, Minister Theano delivered his speech. Theano reminded the new minister of the challenges that laid ahead in this function.
"Many hot topics await you, especially that of the army," he said. He stressed the need to succeed in this department as it deems to be a sensitive ministry for the government of Martelly-Lamothe.
"Today, the Ministry of Defense is reactivated after several years. Homeland defense will be the over arching motive of my mission," assured the Minister Joazile.
The Minister noted that homeland defense is not limited to the establishment or not of a defense force, but it requires a synergy between various departments - Environment - Planning - Economy and Finance.
The new minister who also presided over the senate in 2011 will have to get to work to develop a defense plan to counter the possible environmental and ecological threats. He will also record on the floor of armed men who claim FAd'H.
"Son of a soldier, and I a soldier, legalistic as I am, I intend to enforce the constitutional provisions," he blurted to loud applause of the ceremony's attendees. "Joint efforts are needed to deliver the service to the people," urged the new defense minister addressing his former senate colleagues.
"It is with joy that I find myself in this family is that of the Ministry of Defense. I think I have your support," he said, addressing the crowd.
Joazile's 6 year term as senator ended on May 8th 2012. He presided as President of the Senate from May 2011 to December 2011. During this time no new laws or resolutions were passed in the legislature.
